Where growing Cherokee County businesses get stuck
Most of the companies we talk to didn't plan their IT. It grew one hire, one laptop and one subscription at a time.
IT is someone's second job
The office manager or the owner's nephew resets passwords, buys laptops and calls the internet provider. It works until that person is on vacation or something serious breaks.
You added people, not structure
Five years ago you had eight staff. Now you have forty, a second location or a crew in the field, and the same shared passwords and the same old server in the closet.
Nobody can say if the backup works
There's a backup of some kind. No one has tried restoring from it, and no one is sure whether it covers Microsoft 365, the accounting file or the laptops.
Your provider is hard to reach
Tickets sit for days, nobody comes on site, and every invoice has hours you can't match to anything. You've stopped calling because it isn't worth the hassle.
What running a business in Cherokee County means for your IT
Cherokee County has changed fast. The Census Bureau puts the population at about 293,500 in mid-2024, up roughly 10 percent since the 2020 census. More people means more businesses, and the county now has about 6,550 employer establishments. Most are very small. But around 1,450 employ between 10 and 249 people, and that middle group is where IT usually starts to hurt.
The local business mix
The county isn't dominated by one industry. In the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns, the largest group by count is professional and technical services: accountants, engineers, consultants, architects, law offices and similar firms, about 975 in all. Construction and the building trades come next at about 925. Health care has about 685 establishments and employs more than 10,000 people, helped along by Northside Hospital Cherokee, which opened its new campus off I-575 at GA-20 in Canton in 2017 and has kept adding medical office space since. Manufacturing is a smaller group, about 185 sites, but those sites employ around 6,000 people, so the typical plant is bigger than the typical office.
Each of these has its own IT needs. A dental or physical therapy practice has to protect patient records under HIPAA. A builder or trade contractor has project managers and estimators working from trucks and job sites, sharing plans from phones and tablets. A CPA firm lives on its tax software and a crush of client files every spring. A plant in Canton or Ball Ground may run production equipment on Windows PCs that are hard to patch and can't simply be replaced. The same managed IT plan has to fit all of them, which is why we start with an assessment instead of a package.
Growth without an IT department
Many Cherokee County businesses grew from a handful of people to 30 or 60 without ever hiring anyone for IT. That's normal. It also means the setup reflects history, not design: a consumer router from the first office, accounts for people who left years ago, and one person who knows the admin password. Fixing that doesn't require starting over. It requires someone to take inventory, close the obvious gaps and then keep everything maintained.
A commuter county
Census figures put the average commute for Cherokee County workers at a little over 31 minutes, longer than the Georgia average. Many residents work outside the county, and many local employers draw staff from across the north metro. Since 2020, a lot of those people work from home part of the week. That makes secure remote access, managed laptops and Microsoft 365 set up properly more important than the server in the back room.
Geography matters
The county runs from the Lake Allatoona shoreline and Woodstock in the south to Nelson on the Pickens County line. I-575 is the spine. Off it, places like Free Home, Macedonia and parts of Waleska are still rural. Internet options there can be thinner than in Towne Lake or downtown Canton, and power comes from Georgia Power or one of three electric cooperatives depending on the address. Storms that knock out a line in the north end may not touch the south. A good IT plan accounts for that with a backup internet connection where it makes sense, battery backup on the network gear and cloud services that keep people working from anywhere.

Across Cherokee County, from the lake to the mountains
Our engineers drive up from Alpharetta. Woodstock and Towne Lake are reached on GA-92 and I-575, Canton and Waleska on GA-140 or I-575, and Hickory Flat, Free Home and Macedonia from GA-400 on GA-20 and GA-369. Ball Ground and Nelson sit at the north end of I-575. Most support happens remotely within minutes; site visits are scheduled when hands are needed, and we plan routes so a trip to the north end isn't a surprise.
